Abstract

Jelen tanulmányban az úgynevezett ezredfordulós generáció - azaz a magyarországi felsőoktatásban jelenleg tanuló generáció - motivációinak és preferenciáinak szakirodalmi áttekintése és empirikus vizsgálata segítségével a hallgatók és nyelvtanárok között lévő generációs különbségeket kutatjuk. A szakirodalmi áttekintés eredményeként kiderült, hogy az eddigi kutatások jelentős különbségeket mutattak ki a tanárok (X generáció) és a hallgatók (Y generáció) között. Ezek a különbségek azonban elsősorban nyugati országokból származó tanulmányok kutatásain alapultak. Megállapítást nyert, hogy a feltételezés, miszerint az Y generáció ugyanolyan az Amerikai Egyesült Államokban, mint Magyarországon, tévesnek bizonyul, mivel nem számol a korábbi tanulmányokban megállapított kulturális különbségekkel. Így tehát empirikus vizsgálatot végeztünk, hogy megismerjük a magyarországi ezredfordulós generáció motivációit és preferenciáit, továbbá mérlegeljük ezen megállapítások nyelvoktatásra gyakorolt lehetséges hatását. Megállapítható, hogy Magyarországon a motivációs tényezők jobban hasonlítanak a korábbi vizsgálatok során más országokban a babyboom generációnál megfigyeltekhez, mint a nyugati országokból származó jelenlegi kutatási eredményekhez. A babyboom generáció motivációs tényezőihez való visszatérés tekinthető az ingaeffektus kezdeti előjelének,vagy talán annak tudható be, hogy a gazdasági viszonyok erősen hatnak a motivációs mintákra. Bár az általánosíthatósághoz további kutatásra van szükség, a kezdeti eredmények azt sejtetik, hogy a jelenleg aktív X generációs tanároknak vissza kell tekinteniük a babyboom generációra, vagyis a volt tanáraikra, ha meg akarják érteni a hallgatók jelenlegi generációját.

Abstract

In this study we investigate the generational differences between students and language teachers in the setting of Hungarian higher education through a review of the literature and an empirical study of the motivations and preferences of the millennial generation, i.e. the current generation of students in higher education in Hungary. The findings of the literature review uncovered that existing research indicated significant differences between teachers (Generation X) and students (Generation Y). However, these differences were based upon the studies primarily from Western countries. It was found that the assumption that Generation Y in the US is the same as Generation Y in Hungary appears a false one, as it doesn’t allow for the cultural differences found to exist in previous studies. Hence an empirical study was undertaken to uncover the motivators and preferences for the millennial generation in Hungary and consider the potential impact of these findings upon language teaching. It is found that motivators in Hungary are more similar to the motivators found in previous studies in other countries for the baby boom generation than for current findings from Western countries. This return to motivators of the baby boom generation may be seen as an initial indication of the pendulum effect or possibly due to the fact that economic circumstances heavily impact upon motivators. Although further research is needed to ensure generalizability, initial findings indicate that as teachers belonging to generation X we need to look at the baby boomer generation, i.e. the teachers that taught us, as a means of understanding the current generation of students
