Abstract

The purpose of this study is to answer the following two questions: - What makes a well-functioning food hub being a social enterprise in Szeklerland? How can we help the Szeklerland landscape to survive through conserving small farms? Fort the first question I am going to present a case study from Székelyudvarhely, and for the second one I prepared Systematic Literature Review to map out the real life of smallholders worldwide, their impact on the environment and their socio embeddedness., Findings – Present paper wants to prove that the small producers operating in Szeklerland are the “last Mohicans” of the region. It is the responsibility of the whole community to keep them alive. Any company that supports their work by marketing their products in a short supply chain performs social and environmental sustainability tasks. The preservation of the landscape of Szeklerland and farming habits can only be imagined if we all help to keep small producers and farmers alive. Practical implications - My study and research are prepared primarily with the intention of drawing the attention of the public institution leaders and politicians of the region to a treasure, the loss of which could transform the landscape, economy, and social structure of Szeklerland. My daily work takes place in a food hub in Szeklerland. Social implications – Small farmers in Szeklerland are not always aware of the importance of the environmental, economic and landscape conservation aspect of their work. They need to be made aware of how indispensable work they do for Szekler society. And decision-makers need to be made aware of the responsibilities that lie with them when smallholders are no longer able to do their job.
